Bark Carving

Loading...

Media TitleBark Carving
Media NotesCurrently at cabin near Blanding.  Info from David Laws (8-JUL-09):  Near as I remember, the bark was stripped off a tree on what is now the Wagon Wheel ATV trail.  It was in a grove of quakies just north of where the trail crossed a creek in a muddy hole.  It has now been bridged for the ATV’s.  For some inexplicable reason, the tree was cut down right through the name.  Which is the angle cut on the bark.  It was the only one cut down in the entire grove which lead Dad to believe it was someone angry at him.  I saw it when it was intact and I think Jodi and Rick were with Dad when they found it cut down so they stripped off the bark.  It was 1984 or 85 I think.  You might want to ask some of my other siblings the story as they may have a first-hand account.  I got on Google Earth and best of my memory the approximate coordinates of the grove are 37 deg 47’ 25.26” N, 109 deg 26’ 49.10” W.

A related story is that there was another tree in Pissant canyon with Asa’s name carved in 1933 and Dad’s in 1977 and then mine in 1982 all carved below Asa’s.  While I was on my mission, someone also cut that one down but the bark landed facing the ground and was rotted by the time I got to it in late ‘80’s.  Approx Google Earth coordinates 37 deg 46’ 54.57” N, 109 deg 27’ 26.26 W.
